Britain has imposed new sanctions against Russians over Navalny's death

The United Kingdom has announced a new package of sanctions against seven Russian citizens and two research institutions involved in the development of the nerve agent “Novichok” and the toxin epibatidine.

The restrictions were imposed in connection with the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny and the death of British citizen Dawn Sturgess, who was accidentally fatally exposed to “Novichok” in 2018 following the Russian security services’ assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

The sanctions target the directors and researchers of the Signal Institute, as well as the heads of the State Research and Testing Institute of Military Medicine and the State Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technologies. According to the British government, some of them were involved in research on “Novichok” and epibatidine.

London emphasized that the Russian authorities had the means, motive, and opportunity to use these toxic substances, and stated that it would continue to hold accountable those involved in chemical weapons programs.
