A Chechen activist attempted to take his own life in Kazakhstan for the second time this week
Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev attempted suicide for the second time in one week in Kazakhstan. Movlaev made his first attempt on September 15 at a pretrial detention center in Almaty, where he has been held for the past year and a half awaiting extradition to Russia. Afterward, the activist received medical care and was hospitalized. While in the hospital, he attempted to take his own life again.
In 2019–2020, Movlaev provided opposition Telegram channels with information about abductions, torture, and the fabrication of criminal cases in Chechnya. In 2023, he left Russia, and in May 2025, he was detained in Almaty. Kazakhstani authorities denied the activist asylum, and since May 2025, he has been held in a pretrial detention center awaiting extradition.
After his first suicide attempt, Movlaev left a note stating that he was tired of injustice and that, if returned to Russia, he would face torture and death.

According to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Russian gasoline shipments to Central Asia and Afghanistan have fallen by 34%, and jet fuel shipments by 90%. Against this backdrop, Kazakhstani refineries were in no hurry to direct additional volumes of their own production to the Russian market.
Earlier, the SBU uncovered a network of call centers used to recruit drug dealers in Kazakhstan.
