10,000 people are being evacuated due to wildfires in southern France

In southern France, more than 10,000 people have been ordered to evacuate due to wildfires caused by the summer heatwave in Europe. Residents of more than a dozen small towns and villages in the foothills of the French Pyrenees near the border with Spain have been ordered to leave their homes.

The fire, which broke out in Trévillach near Perpignan, has already engulfed at least 4,600 hectares of land, and strong winds threaten to cause the fire to spread further.

Spectators at the famous Tour de France were urged to stay away from the finish line of the third stage on Monday to keep logistics routes clear for emergency vehicles. The European Union is sending four firefighting planes from Cyprus and Sweden to assist the country. Meanwhile, fires are also raging in neighboring Spain, where more than 2,200 hectares have been burned in the Les Gavarres Nature Reserve, and in the eastern province of Castellón, 500 people had to be evacuated due to the threat to the Sierra de Espadan National Park, according to Ukrinform.

This was reported by the BBC.

In southern France, nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated due to large-scale wildfires. The fires are spreading rapidly due to the heat and strong winds, and rescue workers continue to battle several major fire hotspots.

In France, officials estimate that the extreme heat may have caused more than 2,000 deaths in a single week. According to preliminary estimates, a significant number of these deaths may be directly linked to prolonged exposure to abnormally high temperatures.
