Chinook evacuates Civil Guard helicopter in Spain — AeroTime

In Spain, a military CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter evacuated a damaged EC-135 of the Civil Guard's mountain rescue unit from the Gredos Mountains. During a rescue mission, the EC-135 struck a mountain slope with the tips of its main rotor blades. The crew managed to land the helicopter on a narrow ledge on the slope near a small mountain shelter for climbers.

Aerial evacuation

Due to the difficult terrain and the remoteness of the landing site, the only option for removing the damaged helicopter was aerial evacuation. Civil Guard personnel and Spanish Army servicemen took part in the joint operation.

The EC-135 was secured with slings and then lifted by a CH-47 Chinook from the 5th Transport Helicopter Battalion, based in the Madrid region. AeroTime reports on the operation.

No injuries

No one was injured either during the incident or during the evacuation. Information about the EC-135's technical condition and the extent of its damage was not disclosed. The Spanish Army shared a video of the operation's key moments on social media.

A similar incident occurred near the same shelter in April 2013. At that time, another Civil Guard helicopter was also forced to make an emergency landing after striking the slope with its main rotor during a rescue mission. It was likewise evacuated from the mountain with the help of a CH-47.
