Cyprus to provide young families with around 570 housing plots — Cyprus Mail

The Cypriot government plans to provide young families with around 570 land plots for building their own homes. Plots in different parts of the island will be sold for 25% of their market value, Cyprus Mail reports.

Conditions for purchasing land

The programme is intended for Cypriot citizens: married couples with or without children, as well as single-parent families. For couples, at least one applicant must be under 45 years old at the time of application.

For couples, their current place of residence must be located less than 15 kilometres from the plot they want to purchase. The applicant family’s income must not exceed €45,000 for childless couples and single-parent families, €50,000 for families of three, €55,000 for families of four, and €65,000 for families of five or more.

Priority for village residents

Cyprus’ Interior Ministry said the plots will be allocated as a priority to people born in the villages who permanently live there, as well as displaced persons permanently residing in these villages. Priority is also envisaged for internal migrants wishing to return to their village, repatriates or emigrants who meet special conditions, and permanent residents of neighbouring villages.

If several applicants seek the same plot, large families will be given priority first. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou noted that the authorities are using state land to meet the housing needs of young families. According to him, the programme is also intended to help revive rural communities, including in mountainous and remote areas, by attracting new residents.
