Daniel Kinahan was extradited from the UAE and imprisoned in Ireland
Daniel Kinahan, an Irishman charged with leading an organized crime group, was extradited from the United Arab Emirates to Ireland and placed in the high-security Portlaoise Prison. On Sunday, he was flown from Dubai to Casement Airfield on an Irish government plane, after which he appeared before a criminal court in Dublin.
According to The Guardian, 49-year-old Kinahan has been charged with leading an organized crime group. He has not been convicted of any crime and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The next hearing in the non-jury court is scheduled for October 5.
Kinahan is being held separately from other inmates in Block A, which typically houses eight people. According to the publication, he will spend about 20 hours a day in his cell and will go out to the exercise yard on his own. He has access to a small gym with a treadmill and a set of free weights, a limited library, and a prison store where he can purchase personal items.

During the court hearing, Kinahan was informed that a bail motion must be filed with the High Court. In response, he noted that, in his opinion, he would not be granted bail. He will be able to communicate with his wife and children, who are in Dubai, via video call; during in-person visits, a glass partition will separate him from his visitors.
The U.S. had previously offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Kinahan’s arrest or conviction. The U.S. Department of the Treasury stated that the Kinahan gang was involved in a conflict with another group in Ireland and Spain, which resulted in numerous murders. The extradition became possible following the signing last year of an extradition treaty between Ireland and the UAE.
