Democrats propose alternative to Republican anti-socialism resolution — The Hill
A group of four Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives proposed an amendment to a Republican resolution condemning socialism and the positions of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The Democratic initiative also criticizes socialism but excludes provisions related to the SAVE America Act bill, The Hill reports.
Republican resolution
The resolution was introduced by Republican House member Jeff Crank. The document condemns socialism as well as certain DSA positions, including calls to abolish prisons and grant non-citizens the right to vote in the United States. The resolution was planned to be brought before the House of Representatives this week.
The text also included a call to pass the SAVE America Act, a bill long promoted by President Donald Trump. It would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and presentation of photo identification when voting. According to The Hill, the bill has failed several times in the Senate.

Democrats’ arguments
The Democratic amendment lists, in the wording of its authors, the failures of socialism in other countries and controversial DSA positions, including abolishing capitalism and the U.S. Armed Forces. The authors also called the organization’s ideology incompatible with American values and the U.S. Constitution.
The House Rules Committee approved advancing the Republican resolution without allowing a vote on the proposed amendment. House member Jared Moskowitz said the Democratic initiative was intended to show voters that, in his view, Republicans were not taking the issue seriously. House member Hillary Scholten said that adding the SAVE America Act weakens the substance of the resolution on socialism and combines two separate issues.
Republicans have made opposition to socialism one element of their campaign ahead of the midterm elections, linking the Democratic Party to democratic socialists and progressive candidates. At the same time, some Democrats have expressed concern that DSA candidates could harm the party’s prospects in competitive districts.
