A Russian general who was expelled from the Kharkiv region by the Ukrainian Armed Forces is set to become a State Duma deputy

Colonel General Alexander Lapin, who commanded the “Center” group in 2022 and lost control of part of the Kharkiv region following the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive, may be appointed to a political post in Russia. According to local media reports, he is being considered as a potential candidate for the position of chairman of the State Duma’s Defense Committee on behalf of United Russia.

One of the publication’s sources noted that the current committee chairman, Andrei Kartapolov, who was elected to the State Duma in 2021, is highly unlikely to seek re-election.

The 62-year-old Lapin plans to run for the State Duma on the “United Russia” list from Tatarstan. In 2017, he was appointed chief of staff of the Russian military group in Syria, and in November of that year, he became commander of the Central Military District. After the military group under his command withdrew from the Kharkiv region during the war against Ukraine, Lapin was relieved of his post. In January 2023, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff—First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces. He was subsequently transferred to the post of Commander of the Leningrad Military District.
