Parts of Lithuania, particularly the southern regions, are being affected by smoke from the forest fires currently raging in Belarus. Residents are reporting a strong smell of smoke and a decline in air quality.

This was reported by LRT, citing the National Public Health Center.

According to local authorities, the fire near the border with the village of Šeivena broke out on Saturday evening and spread rapidly. The smoke began moving toward Lithuanian settlements, including Kabeliai and Kapiniškiai.

Overnight, the fire spread into Lithuanian territory, but it was contained by the State Forest Service and rescue teams. The fire was brought under control by Sunday morning, though authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the fire continues in Belarus, and smoke is spreading toward Druskininkai, engulfing surrounding villages.

Authorities note that there is no direct threat to the population, but recommend limiting time spent outdoors.

The Fire and Rescue Service added that due to a lack of information from the Belarusian side, the exact extent of the fires remains unknown at this time.
