Park at the center of cultural tourism
The Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum is among Ghana’s ten most visited sites. It is dedicated to the country’s first president and his contribution to the struggle for African independence and unity.
The park was renovated with $4.8 million in support from the World Bank. It now hosts cultural events, educational tours and national celebrations. The site also enables visitors from Ghana and other countries to learn more about Nkrumah’s life and legacy.

Investment in tourism services
Historic landmarks attract tourists and create demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport, guide services and products made by local producers. IFC supports the tourism sector by financing PLP Properties’ construction of a 170-room Hampton by Hilton hotel in Accra.
The project is expected to support nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, of which 200 will be permanent. The article notes that upgrades to cultural sites and private investment in hotel infrastructure complement each other in the development of Ghana’s tourism.
