Powerful Typhoon Bavi is approaching China; Taiwan is preparing for the storm
The powerful Typhoon Bavi is approaching China’s east coast. According to meteorologists, the maximum sustained wind speed at the typhoon’s center is reaching 155 km/h.
The storm is expected to pass north of Taiwan, bringing heavy rain to the island on Saturday night. After that, Bavi will head toward China and, according to forecasts, make landfall on the evening of July 12 south of Shanghai, near the border between Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.
In Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, schools were closed on Friday. In northern ports, fishing vessels returned to harbor, and many flights to Japan, Hong Kong, and other destinations were canceled until at least Saturday.
In the Chinese province of Zhejiang, more than 17,000 people were evacuated due to the threat of the typhoon. In addition, approximately 170,000 rescue workers are on standby. In the neighboring province of Fujian, some ferry services have been suspended due to strong winds and rough seas, and fishing boats have been ordered to return to port.
It is noted that Bavi weakened after reaching super typhoon strength earlier this week and causing significant damage on the island of Saipan and other U.S. territories in the Pacific Ocean.
Meanwhile, China continues to deal with the aftermath of previous natural disasters. Floods caused by Tropical Storm Maysak in the Guangxi region have claimed the lives of 39 people. Another 11 people were killed by thunderstorms and tornadoes in Hubei Province. Separately, in Gansu Province, 21 forestry workers died in a landslide unrelated to the storms.
The Associated Press reported this on July 10.
As a reminder, Japan’s southwestern islands have been placed on high alert due to the approach of the powerful Typhoon Bavi. Authorities are warning the public about hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, and the threat of flooding and landslides, while airlines have already begun canceling flights en masse.
As a reminder, at least 66 people died as a result of one of the most powerful typhoons this year, which swept through the central part of the Philippines.
