General Kane will arrive in Poland for urgent talks

General Dan Kane, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, will arrive in Warsaw next week to discuss Washington’s decision to cancel the deployment of an American armored brigade to Poland.

This was reported by RMF 24.

According to Polish media, the visit is scheduled for Wednesday and has already drawn significant attention in Poland’s political and military circles. This comes amid the U.S. unexpectedly deciding against sending approximately 4,000 troops to Polish territory.

Washington’s decision has raised questions about the future of the U.S. military presence in Central and Eastern Europe and the level of security guarantees for Poland. U.S. military leadership explained the change in plans as “the most sensible option,” but did not provide details.

A series of consultations is already underway in Poland between military officials and government representatives to clarify the U.S. position. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz plans to meet with General Kane to discuss next steps and possible formats for defense cooperation.

At the same time, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Wiesław Kukula will hold talks with the commander of U.S. forces in Europe, General Alex Grinkevich. The Polish side emphasizes that it is in constant contact with U.S. military leadership.

It is also noted that Poland’s deputy defense ministers are already in the U.S. for international talks and to present Poland’s position. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also involved in the process.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Congress, Army Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve stated that he has no information on whether Poland was previously informed about changes to the brigade’s plans. He also could not confirm whether there is an alternative or replacement for the withdrawn forces in the region.

Poland is discussing with the U.S. a possible increase in the American military presence on its territory. The talks are taking place against the backdrop of Washington’s plans to reduce its contingent in Germany. Warsaw believes that additional U.S. forces could strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and serve as another deterrent signal to Russia.

Trump announced further troop reductions in Germany.

NATO stated that it remains confident in its defense capabilities following the U.S. decision to withdraw some troops from Germany. The Alliance says this is a signal for Europe to invest more in its own security.

As a reminder, the Pentagon has decided to withdraw approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. The process is planned to be carried out over the next six to twelve months. This is part of a review of U.S. force deployments in Europe.

Berlin acknowledges that the continent will have to strengthen its own defense more quickly and more seriously to compensate for the gradual reduction of the American presence.
