Former Kaduna governor El-Rufai says associates remain silent — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai said that some of his colleagues, friends and relatives, whom he had previously publicly supported or with whom he had been closely associated, have not spoken out about his current situation. He wrote this in a statement, “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” published on Facebook on September 23, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
El-Rufai’s statement
El-Rufai said that throughout his life he had supported people and causes he believed in, including in difficult circumstances and at the cost of personal losses. According to him, he was guided by his Islamic faith, personal values, convictions and conscience, rather than by expectations of gratitude or reciprocity.
The former governor said that the people he had helped could decide for themselves whether to speak publicly or remain silent. He added that some may deny their relationship with him or try to reinterpret their shared history, but he does not wish to condemn them for that choice. El-Rufai also said that he has no regrets about supporting people and causes he considered right, and that he does not seek revenge or retribution.

Proceedings against the politician
According to the publication, El-Rufai is in the custody of Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) amid corruption allegations.
Premium Times Nigeria links the proceedings primarily to recommendations in a report following a 2024 investigation by the Kaduna State Assembly. The report accused El-Rufai’s administration, which governed the state from 2015 to 2023, of mismanaging public funds.
According to the publication, the ICPC has filed several charges against the former governor in federal and state courts. One of them concerns the alleged wiretapping of telephone conversations of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to all counts and said the prosecution was politically motivated. His lawyers are challenging the court-authorized continued detention.
