Yemen calls for shared responsibility for protecting Bab el-Mandeb Strait — Anadolu Agency

In New York, United States, Yemen’s Vice President of the Presidential Leadership Council Abdullah al-Alimi said during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly that protecting the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a shared responsibility of the countries in the region and the international community. According to him, Yemen cannot bear this burden alone.

As Anadolu Agency reports, al-Alimi said that Houthi attacks on maritime shipping have turned the security of one of the world’s most important transport routes into an instrument of pressure and bargaining. He described the use of maritime security for blackmail as a threat not only to Yemen but also to the global economy.

Support for Yemen’s government

According to al-Alimi, years of conflict have demonstrated that supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government and strengthening its economic, security and military capabilities is a contribution to international security and stability.

He also stated that the security of the Red Sea depends on Yemen’s stability, while restoring effective state authority is necessary for the country’s stability. In his view, sustainable peace is impossible as long as an armed group stands above the state and outside the law.

Statements regarding the Houthis

Al-Alimi said that Yemen’s government had responded responsibly and positively to regional and international initiatives and made substantial concessions to achieve peace and ease the situation of Yemenis. At the same time, he accused the Houthis of intransigence, rejecting peace initiatives and using periods of humanitarian truce to build up their military capabilities.

The official also claimed that the group is escalating attacks in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the interests of the “Iranian agenda.” Al-Alimi stated that there was no effective and decisive international position regarding the threat posed by the Houthis and called on the international community to form a strategic partnership with Yemen to strengthen security and stability in the region.
