The EU has imposed sanctions on six individuals for human rights violations in Iran
The Council of the European Union has decided to impose sanctions on six individuals whom it considers responsible for gross human rights violations in Iran.
The sanctions list includes five judges from Iran’s Revolutionary Courts who, according to the EU, have handed down death sentences, long prison terms, and other punishments against political dissidents, human rights defenders, and members of religious minorities, particularly following the 2022 protests.
Iranian hacker Nima Salehi, believed to be the founder of the cyber group Ashiyane, was also sanctioned. According to the EU, the group collaborated with Iranian security forces and participated in cyberattacks against the opposition and foreign organizations.
Following the adoption of this new decision, EU sanctions over human rights violations in Iran now cover 269 individuals and 53 organizations. The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans to the EU, and other financial restrictions.
