Estonia is ready to discuss participating in a military mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The Estonian government has not ruled out the possibility of joining a military mission aimed at restoring free navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

This was stated by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, according to ERR.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Tallinn is ready to discuss with the U.S. the participation of its military in a mission to unblock the vital sea route, through which about 20% of the world’s oil exports from the Persian Gulf countries pass.

“The U.S. President said he expects support from NATO allies… Estonia’s position is that if the U.S. raises this issue, for example, within NATO or at the bilateral level—then, of course, we are ready to discuss these matters… It all depends very much on what exactly the U.S. asks for, if they ask at all. So far, there have been no official requests at the NATO level,” Tsahkna noted.

The foreign minister recalled that Estonia has already participated in U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and “will always support an ally when needed.”

Tsakhna added that any military support must be based on “very clear plans.”

“At this point, it can be said that the European side does not know what the United States’ strategic goals are. Frankly speaking, we didn’t know either when this war began. So in that sense, there are many questions,” the minister emphasized.

Earlier, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten stated that the country does not plan to join the international mission to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz in the near future.

The Finnish Navy officially announced that it is unable to deploy its combat units to the Strait of Hormuz to participate in the international mission.
