Estonia in talks with France on nuclear deterrence
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said in Rovaniemi that Tallinn is in talks with France about joining its enhanced nuclear deterrence initiative. This was reported by ERR News, citing Michal’s statement to AFP.
Conditions for cooperation
According to the head of the Estonian government, it is not possible to simply join such an initiative, as this requires certain capabilities and readiness. Michal spoke to AFP on the sidelines of the European Arctic Summit.
He noted that Estonia is already under NATO’s nuclear umbrella. According to him, France also supports Estonia’s independence, and its military personnel are stationed in the country.

Dialogue with France
Michal suggested that if it becomes possible to deepen cooperation in the nuclear sphere, this will probably happen. France’s newly appointed ambassador to Estonia, Alexandre Escorcia, said in an interview with Postimees that France is moving toward advanced nuclear deterrence.
According to the ambassador, France and Estonia have already discussed this issue, as well as other areas of defense cooperation.
