The European Commission has responded to the challenge to the sanctions against Peskov's wife
The European Commission stated that it has no doubts regarding the legitimacy of the sanctions imposed in 2022 against Tatiana Navka, the wife of Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Officials in Brussels emphasized that the decision was made based on sufficient evidence and in accordance with European Union law.
Responding to journalists’ questions about the legality of the sanctions against Tatiana Navka, a European Commission spokesperson gave a brief answer:
“‘Yes’—that is the short answer regarding our confidence.”
He emphasized that EU sanctions are legal decisions that can be challenged in the Court of Justice of the European Union, so there must be a solid evidentiary basis before they are imposed.
The spokesperson also noted that adding a person to the sanctions list is possible only after a unanimous decision by all 27 member states of the European Union.
According to him, this very procedure was followed when the sanctions against the Kremlin spokesperson’s wife were adopted.
The European Commission explained that the sanctions were imposed due to Navka’s activities in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
According to the spokesperson, she is a co-owner of companies and property in the temporarily occupied Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
“She is a co-owner of companies and property located on the Crimean Peninsula, which was illegally annexed by the Russian Federation, and therefore she supports actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine,” stated Anwar al-Anouni.
In addition, Brussels emphasized that Navka is linked to a sanctioned individual—Dmitry Peskov—who, according to the EU’s assessment, actively supports Russia’s policies and actions that undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.
The European Commission noted that these circumstances specifically serve as the basis for maintaining the current sanctions and explain Brussels’ confidence in the legality of the decision.

Tatyana Navka, the wife of Russian President Dmitry Peskov’s spokesperson, has filed a lawsuit with the European Union court demanding that the sanctions against her be lifted. She is also seeking more than 2 million euros in compensation from the EU for alleged damages.
