European airlines seek support amid Middle East crisis

European carriers such as Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways have appealed to authorities to reduce taxes, grant exemptions, and permit the use of Jet A fuel due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This request highlights the significant operational challenges and financial pressures the airlines face.

In March 2026, the airlines warned of at least a 4% fare increase if the conflict ends by summer, with even steeper rises if the crisis continues. On April 10, officials announced that failure to reopen the strategic strait within three weeks would trigger a fuel shortage, resulting in heavy industry losses. Consequently, airlines have already begun scaling back their summer flight schedules.

Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways are major European airlines operating extensive international networks and large fleets requiring substantial fuel supplies. Using Jet A fuel could help mitigate the impending shortages.

Overall, Europe’s aviation sector is under considerable strain due to the regional conflict, threatening higher ticket prices and reduced flight availability. Government intervention and fuel policy adjustments are critical to stabilizing the situation.

If timely state support is not provided, the aviation crisis may worsen, adversely affecting the broader economy and travel across the region.
