A historic video of Kravchuk's visit to the White House was shown in the U.S.

Archival footage of Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk’s first official visit to the White House in 1992 has been released in the United States. The footage captures his meeting with U.S. President George H.W. Bush in the Oval Office and a joint press briefing. The video was published in the U.S. National Archives Catalog.

In the United States, archival footage has been declassified and released, taking us back to the early years of Ukraine’s independence, when Leonid Kravchuk, in his first visit to the White House as head of state, met with then-U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

This was reported by the George Herbert Walker Bush Presidential Library, and the materials were also posted in the U.S. National Archives Catalog. The publication was initiated by Ukrainian-American political scientist and Baylor University professor Serhiy Kudelia, who submitted a request for the footage.

The released footage captures the visit of Ukraine’s first president, Leonid Kravchuk, to Washington on May 6, 1992. In the video, he and George H.W. Bush hold a briefing for journalists in the Oval Office of the White House, which became one of the first symbolic diplomatic contacts between independent Ukraine and the United States.

The archival footage captures the atmosphere of that time, when Ukraine was just beginning to shape its foreign policy and build relations with the United States, and Kravchuk’s visit itself became an important step toward international recognition of the new state.
