Discussions are still ongoing within the European Union regarding whether to extend protection for Ukrainian citizens

There is currently no final decision within the European Union regarding a possible one-year extension of temporary protection status for Ukrainian asylum seekers. Official internal discussions on this matter between relevant agencies and representatives of European countries are still ongoing.

This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammerth, according to a European Truth correspondent in Brussels.

According to the representative of the European institution, the European Commission launched these consultations with EU member states back in March during a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. He emphasized that Brussels considers this dialogue critically necessary, as this issue directly concerns continued support for Ukraine and meeting the basic needs of millions of Ukrainian refugees within the EU.

Despite lengthy debates and an understanding of the importance of this step for stability in the region, no official agreements or approved regulatory documents have been adopted at this stage. A common position among all participating countries regarding the legal status of Ukrainians will be coordinated during upcoming meetings of interested parties.

The EU may change the terms of temporaryprotection for Ukrainians, according to the European Commission.

As a reminder, Slovakia has automatically extended the term of temporary protection for Ukrainians who fled Ukraine due to the full-scale war launched by Russia until March 4, 2027.

In addition, Ukrainians who have received temporary protection in Ireland can breathe a sigh of relief, as the country’s authorities have automatically extended their immigration permits until March 4, 2027.

Although the EU has extended temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until 2027 and guaranteed them access to housing, the labor market, education, and healthcare, the situation is already changing in many ways.
