The EU has stated that Russia is losing its ability to dictate terms
EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova stated that Russia is gradually running out of resources and is no longer capable of imposing its own scenario for ending the war on Ukraine. According to her, Moscow cannot achieve victory on the battlefield, which is why it is intensifying attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Russia is becoming increasingly exhausted by the war against Ukraine and no longer has the capabilities it had at the start of the full-scale invasion. The European Union believes that the Kremlin is gradually losing its chance to impose its own terms for ending the war on Kyiv.
According to her, Moscow must understand that the war cannot end solely according to the Kremlin’s scenario. “Russia is losing momentum. Ukraine is beginning to fight back decisively. Moscow must finally understand that the time has come to end this war. But not on the terms dictated by the Kremlin. On terms that both sides can accept,” the diplomat emphasized.
Maternova also noted that Ukraine has recently been more actively striking military targets on Russian territory. She mentioned the large-scale drone attack on the night of May 17, following which Russian authorities reported issues in the Moscow region and disruptions at airports. “In recent months, Ukraine has significantly intensified its attacks on military targets deep within Russian territory, in line with its technological capabilities. Russian authorities reported hundreds of drones over the Moscow region, damage to strategic buildings, and chaos at airports,” the EU ambassador said.
At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that Russia is not demonstrating the ability to win on the battlefield. According to her, the aggressor country is gradually running out of resources, manpower, and motivation to continue the war. “And since it is losing on the front lines, it is intensifying attacks on the civilian population,” added Maternova.
The European Union has repeatedly stated that support for Ukraine will continue. Brussels also emphasizes that any negotiations to end the war must take place with Ukraine’s participation and take its position into account.
The Kremlin stated that the peace process to end the war in Ukraine is currently on hold. Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the absence of active negotiations and expressed hope for their resumption. At the same time, he did not provide any specific timelines or details.
The European Union is discussing who to send as a mediator for potential negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Prominent European politicians, including Merkel, Draghi, and Stubb, are among the candidates. But the main problem is not the names, but the fact that the EU itself has not yet been able to agree on a unified position.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a large number of diplomatic contacts with European leaders and representatives of the United States are being prepared for next week.
