Putin is heading to China on the heels of Trump — the Kremlin denies any connection

Putin is planning a trip to China on May 19, following Donald Trump’s recent visits and meetings with Xi Jinping. The Kremlin claims that these trips are unrelated and that contacts with Beijing were planned in advance, according to Russian media reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is heading to China on May 19, and this visit has already drawn attention because other political figures, including Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, visited Beijing just days earlier.

The Kremlin immediately sought to dispel all speculation about political coincidences and stated that there is no connection between these trips.

This was reported by Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, who emphasized that contacts between Moscow and Beijing are planned in advance and do not depend on visits by other world leaders. “It should be noted that there is no connection between Trump’s and Putin’s visits. We usually coordinate the agenda for negotiations with the Chinese in advance,” Ushakov said.

According to the Kremlin representative, Moscow describes current relations between Russia and China as “unprecedentedly high” and characterized by a strategic partnership. He also noted that prior to his trip to Beijing, Putin recorded a video message to the Chinese people, which is to be broadcast via local media channels.

During the upcoming talks in China, the parties plan to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues and sign a number of documents—a total of about 40 agreements have been prepared, 21 of which are to be signed in the presence of the leaders.

Putin’s previous visit to China took place in late summer–early fall 2025, and now the Kremlin is once again betting on intensifying contacts with Beijing amid global political tensions.
