Türkiye Diyanet Foundation installs solar-powered borehole near Juba — Anadolu Agency

In the Kwerjic area on the outskirts of Juba, the capital of South Sudan, the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation built a solar-powered borehole to provide residents with clean drinking water. The system is equipped with an automatic pump and two tanks and can supply approximately 4,000 liters of water per day, Anadolu Agency reports.

System with an automatic pump

Residents of Kwerjic had been drawing water from the nearest stream for years. During the dry season, its water level fell, and the water became dirty and unsafe for consumption, creating health risks due to contamination.

According to the agency, the new solar-powered system is expected to become a more reliable source of clean water for the community. It is expected to reduce residents’ dependence on unsafe sources and the risk of water-related diseases.

Need for additional assistance

At the opening ceremony, Türkiye Diyanet Foundation’s representative in Africa, Osman Turk, stated that Türkiye was ready to support the people of South Sudan. According to him, the sides also intend to implement another project. Turk called for protecting the new facility from damage.

Machar Butik, the community leader of the Kwerjic area, noted that there had previously been a water pump there, but it broke down. According to him, thousands of people live in the area and need sufficient access to clean drinking water.

Butik added that Kwerjic, Natoro and Nus need assistance from other humanitarian organizations, particularly because of the considerable distances to water sources and the spread of waterborne diseases. Susan Karaba, a representative of women in Kwerjic, said that schoolchildren have to travel long distances to collect water and that the area needs additional water supply.
