France has criticized Reform UK's plan regarding migrants in the English Channel
The French government has spoken out against a plan by the British right-wing populist party Reform UK to use naval forces to transport migrants attempting to cross the English Channel to France.
According to “European Truth,” citing Sky News, a spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that such actions would constitute “a violation of France’s sovereignty, as well as a violation of maritime law and international law.”
On August 3, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage stated that if the party wins the election, it intends to stop the flow of asylum seekers through “the largest military operation in the English Channel since World War II.”

A spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry also noted that, as part of joint measures and agreements with the United Kingdom implemented at the local level, the number of crossings across the Channel in 2026 has decreased.
The English Channel is one of the main routes for people attempting to reach the United Kingdom from France in small boats. Such journeys are dangerous due to strong currents, heavy ship traffic, and unpredictable weather conditions. On April 27, the French Coast Guard rescued more than a hundred migrants after a boat accident, and in early May, there were fatalities during another attempt to cross the strait.
