The President of the European Parliament is calling for an investigation into a lawmaker's trip to a forum hosted by Putin

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has launched an investigation into Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheuser following his participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and his contacts with representatives of the Russian State Duma.

Metsola has asked the Advisory Committee on the Conduct of Members to assess whether the politician violated the European Parliament’s ethical standards.

The basis for the investigation was a “declaration” published by Kartheuser on the prospects for restoring relations between the European Union and Russia. According to the head of the European Parliament, the document makes no mention of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and could create the impression of an unofficial channel of communication between the European Parliament and the Russian State Duma.

“This could seriously distort the European Parliament’s official position,” Metsola emphasized.

It is noted that Kartheiser had previously been expelled from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group due to a previous trip to Moscow and contacts with the Russian side.

Following the investigation, disciplinary measures may be imposed on the MEP.

On June 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on a conversation with White House Chief Donald Trump regarding a possible meeting with Russia on U.S. soil. According to him, such a format could make it more difficult for Vladimir Putin to refuse negotiations on ending the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the French city of Evian to participate in the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
