U.S. Treasury Secretary Awaits China's Response Regarding the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects China to take action to ensure stable shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the situation in this strategically important strait has a direct impact on global energy security, particularly for China’s economy, which relies heavily on oil supplies via this route.
He made these remarks during his visit to Beijing, Reuters reported.
On Thursday, May 14, Bessent stated that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is in China’s interest.
Therefore, the U.S. secretary believes that Beijing will do everything possible to restore shipping on this waterway.
“I think they will do everything in their power. It is very beneficial for China for the strait to be reopened, and I think they will work behind the scenes to the extent that anyone has influence over the Iranian leadership,” Bessent added.
However, it is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump, before leaving for China to attend a summit with the country’s leader Xi Jinping, stated that he does not expect assistance in ending the war with Iran.
