Greta Thunberg Among Activists Detained in the Mediterranean — The New York Times

Israel intercepted more than a dozen boats carrying humanitarian aid and activists from over 20 countries, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, as they attempted to reach Gaza. Some vessels were escorted to Israeli ports, while about 30 others remain at sea. Organizers said the flotilla was stopped 46 nautical miles from Gaza’s shores.
The incident was reported by The New York Times
Flotilla organizers accused Israeli forces of “illegally intercepting and boarding” the boats in international waters, stressing that the mission carried only food, medicine, and water filters. They described the operation as “an attack on humanitarians.” Israel dismissed the flotilla as a “publicity stunt,” insisting that passengers were safely transferred.
The interceptions sparked mass protests across Europe, with thousands rallying in Italy, Germany, France, and Greece. Demonstrators demanded the release of the detained activists and safe passage for humanitarian cargo into Gaza. Israel has maintained its blockade, arguing that aid shipments could be linked to Hamas.
