Rapid Support Forces group joins Sudanese army — Anadolu Agency

A military group affiliated with Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) joined the Sudanese Armed Forces on September 26. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing the state-run SUNA agency.

The group was led by Al-Tayeb Mohamed Ahmed, also known as Al-Tayeb al-Wahedo. The soldiers who joined the army were received by senior Sudanese army officials and the General Intelligence Service.

Commander’s statement

Al-Wahedo said in a press statement that he had left the RSF and joined the Sudanese army after witnessing tragedies within the paramilitary group’s ranks. He called on other RSF members to join the army, return to their homeland and reconsider their positions. According to him, there are no reasons that would justify continuing the fighting.

The RSF did not immediately comment on the statement.

Previous defections

On August 31, about 200 RSF fighters, including prominent field commanders, joined the Sudanese army in Omdurman and arrived with military equipment. On August 19, the army announced that 318 RSF members, including four commanders, had joined it with up to 50 combat vehicles. On August 13, Sudanese authorities reported that 21 commanders and 270 fighters had joined with 37 combat vehicles.

The war between the Sudanese army and the RSF has continued since April 2023. During this time, the conflict has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and forced millions to leave their homes.
