Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu explains delay in opening bridge
In Lagos, Nigeria, the Ojota–Opebi bridge, which is intended to become an alternative route for motorists, has still not opened due to unfinished work. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that contractors still need to complete certain parts of the project.
Work is expected to be completed within two weeks
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Sanwo-Olu explained that the authorities did not want to open the bridge before the arrival of large cranes needed to carry out the remaining work. According to him, closing the bridge again after traffic had been launched would be impractical.
Contractors assured the state government that they would complete the work within two weeks. If this deadline is met, the bridge may open at the end of September. On September 3, the governor also said that traffic on the bridge was planned to begin by the end of the month.

Previous deadlines had already been postponed
The project has already repeatedly failed to meet announced deadlines. In December 2023, Sanwo-Olu said that the bridge, whose completion was then estimated at about 65%, would be ready in the second or third quarter of 2024. In June 2024, the state government said it intended to complete construction by the end of the year.
Sanwo-Olu also noted that an architectural element is being installed above the bridge, which is intended to give the structure a recognizable appearance. The Ojota–Opebi bridge is expected to provide an alternative connection between the Opebi, Mende, Maryland and Ojota areas and help reduce pressure on nearby roads.
