Plateau State authorities in Nigeria call for investigation into confrontation with VIO officials in Jos

In Jos, Nigeria, the Plateau State government has called for an investigation into a confrontation involving officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), who were conducting an inspection on Ahmadu Bello Way.

Call for an investigation

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, a video of the incident is circulating on social media. The footage shows a confrontation involving VIO officials. The state government condemned the incident, calling it an encroachment on lawful authority.

State Commissioner for Transport Davou Jatau, in a statement issued by his office, called on relevant agencies to establish the causes of the confrontation and the individuals involved. According to him, those found guilty must face liability prescribed by law.

At the same time, the government did not say what exactly caused the confrontation and did not clarify whether any of its participants were injured.

Ministry's position

The state Ministry of Transport said it would not tolerate violence, intimidation, or obstruction of officials while they exercise their lawful powers. Jatau stressed that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the circumstances or alleged provocation.

The authorities called on state residents to behave responsibly and refrain from actions that could disrupt public order or hinder the work of officials. Earlier, the Plateau government reviewed the work of the VIO following allegations against some officials of misconduct, harassment, and excessive enforcement measures. A committee established to examine these allegations submitted a report in April, after which the state appointed a new VIO director.
