Trump says in Dublin he would like to see Irish reunification
US President Donald Trump said during a visit to Dublin that he would like to see the reunification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is governed by the United Kingdom. He spoke on the subject after meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
As Deutsche Welle English reports, Trump called the possible reunification of the two parts of the island “a fantastic thing” and suggested that it would eventually happen. At the same time, he noted that the United Kingdom would also have its own position on the matter.
London’s reaction
The office of UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham responded to the US president’s remarks. It said that, in the British prime minister’s view, there is currently no majority public support for a referendum on the issue, and no new vote will be held until the situation changes.
The issue of Northern Ireland’s status is sensitive: in the 20th century, the region experienced decades of deadly intercommunal violence over the question of its affiliation.

Trump arrived in Ireland primarily to attend the Irish Open golf tournament, which is being held on a course on the country’s Atlantic coast that he owns. During the trip, he also met with Ireland’s president and head of government.
The US president said that the US war with Iran, which, according to DW, began on February 28, would end “very soon.” He also said that after the conflict ends, oil prices, which rose because of the war, would fall sharply. Trump defended the decision to conduct the military operation, saying that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.
Trump also said that Canada seeks to conclude a trade agreement with the United States and that a deal could be reached fairly soon. He repeated his claim that Canada treats American farmers unfairly through tariffs.
