Japan lodged a protest with Russia over Putin's visit to Iturup Island
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s first visit to Iturup Island (known in Japan as Etorofu).
The head of government emphasized that the Northern Territories are an integral part of Japan according to historical context and international law, and that the unannounced trip contradicts Tokyo’s consistent position, offends the feelings of the Japanese people, and further deteriorates bilateral relations.
In response to this incident, the Japanese Foreign Ministry urgently summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolai Nozdryov, and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi called on the diplomat to convey an official protest to the Kremlin.

As a reminder, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island in the Kuril Islands—which is the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan—for the first time. Tokyo has already reacted to the Russian leader’s trip and lodged a strong protest with Moscow.
