Iran attacks Iraqi Kurdistan with drones — Jerusalem Post

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched three drones at a village near the city of Soran in Erbil province in Iraqi Kurdistan on the morning of September 24. One Peshmerga fighter was wounded in the strike, the Jerusalem Post reports, citing the Kurdish media network Rudaw.

Strike near Soran

According to Rudaw, the drones attacked a facility in the village of Dilizian at around 2 a.m. A media source claims that the drones were launched from the Iranian side near the Haji Omaran border crossing.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran confirmed that one of its facilities on the outskirts of Soran was targeted in the attack. The strike occurred several hours after indirect talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. representatives regarding a possible end to the war.

Series of attacks in the region

According to the publication, Iran has carried out more than a thousand drone and missile attacks in the region since February. Kurdish opposition groups, U.S. diplomatic facilities, and other locations were named as their targets.

The attack also took place the day after the anniversary of the 2017 Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum. At that time, the region’s residents voted for independence, after which Iraq attacked Kirkuk, while Iran-backed groups carried out attacks on Kurds.

On the eve, it was also reported that the Peshmerga forces — the armed formations of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq — had been unified. The Kurdish side seeks closer security cooperation with Baghdad and to obtain air defense systems.
