Iran and Saudi Arabia discuss growing regional insecurity
Fighting continues in Yemen between the Houthis and the forces of the internationally recognized government, while the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia discussed by phone the escalation of tensions and growing insecurity in the region. Abbas Araghchi and Faisal bin Farhan held the conversation on the evening of September 10, Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Iran's Foreign Ministry.
Diplomatic efforts
According to the Iranian ministry, the sides stressed the need to continue cooperation and diplomatic efforts to prevent tensions from spreading and restore stability.
Iran's Foreign Ministry did not directly mention Yemen in its report on the conversation. At the same time, in a separate statement on the fighting in the country, the ministry said that the Yemeni crisis cannot be resolved through military intervention.

Fighting in Yemen
Tehran provides military and financial support to Yemen's Houthis, who have long controlled a significant part of the country's north. On September 10, the Houthis captured the strategic port city of Mocha on the Red Sea coast.
Saudi Arabia supports Yemen's internationally recognized government. According to the Houthis, Riyadh has been carrying out airstrikes on their positions since the start of the offensive. On September 9, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said that the group had fired ballistic missiles and launched drones at several cities in southern Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis have held Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and the major port of Hodeidah for years. In recent days, they have begun an offensive toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic passage to the Red Sea that connects Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal.
