Iran may step up terrorist activities in Europe — Euractiv
Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV)) has warned that Iran may step up operations against targets in Europe once tensions in the conflict with Israel and the United States subside. German domestic intelligence believes that Tehran is capable of expanding its subversive and terrorist activities beyond the Middle East if hostilities temporarily subside.
The agency reported this to Euractiv.
According to the German intelligence agency, Iran could, in particular, carry out attacks on Jewish and Israeli institutions, Iranian dissidents, and other individuals considered opponents of the regime.
The BfV noted that it is monitoring cases involving individuals residing in Germany who traveled to Iran for military training or otherwise “placed themselves at the service” of the Iranian regime.
“The BfV believes that after the war ends, the Iranian regime may deploy its intelligence services to track down and persecute opponents of the regime, including (pro-)Jewish, (pro-)Israeli, and American targets, Iranian dissidents, and other individuals deemed ‘traitors,’” the agency stated.
Intelligence officials fear that Tehran may redirect resources to operations abroad as soon as the immediate pressure on the regime eases.
According to the BfV, Iranian intelligence services are prepared to employ methods bordering on state-sponsored terrorism.
"These range from threats against specific individuals to surveillance operations conducted to prepare for terrorist attacks," the agency noted.
Intelligence sources told Euractiv that at least several dozen people left Germany for Iran and subsequently worked on behalf of the regime.
"The level of the abstract threat that Iranian intelligence services pose to pro-Jewish and pro-Israeli targets, as well as to representatives of the Iranian opposition and associated groups in Germany, remains high," the agency emphasized.
