Ireland has backed tougher sanctions against Russia — Thomas Byrne

Ireland advocates for increased sanctions pressure on Russia and supports measures aimed at achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine.

This was stated by Thomas Byrne, Minister of State for European and Defense Affairs at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, ahead of the EU Defense Council meeting.

According to him, Ireland seeks a ceasefire that will ensure a secure and lasting peace for Ukraine and will not allow a scenario in which Russia gains the upper hand in the war.

Burn emphasized that the European Union must continue working on new packages of sanctions against Russia.

He also expressed support for negotiations between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, noting that one of the outcomes of achieving peace should be Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

The EU has expanded sanctions against Russia for the abduction of Ukrainian children.

The EU is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia targeting its shadow fleet.
