Israel carried out strikes on the Abu ad-Duhur airbase in Syria

Israel carried out airstrikes on the Abu ad-Duhur airbase near Aleppo in northwestern Syria. The Syrian state television channel Ekhbariya, citing a military source, reported eight strikes on the base’s runway and storage facilities.

A separate military source and a civilian resident of the area near the base reported that there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the attack. According to The Japan Times, this was likely the first Israeli strike on Syrian government targets since March.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the strikes, stating that they violate Syria’s territorial unity and integrity. Ankara called on the international community to take a more decisive stance to stop what the Turkish ministry called an escalation of Israeli aggression against Syria.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Syria was on the verge of violating the security status quo agreed upon with Israel by allowing the deployment of Turkish troops at the airbase. They also claim that Israel had repeatedly warned Damascus of the threat to its security in the event of such a deployment. At the same time, the Turkish Foreign Ministry did not specify whether Turkish troops were present at the base.

Tom Barrack, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, stated that Washington is deeply concerned about the confirmed strikes on Abu al-Duhur. He called them an unnecessary escalation that does not contribute to regional stability and urged all parties to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani called for an end to the attacks and stated that Damascus would continue its diplomatic efforts to secure a halt to the Israeli strikes. The airbase is located approximately 70 kilometers east of the Turkish border and has not been used as a dedicated military airfield since 2013.
