Cameroon discusses water and energy cooperation with Egypt
In Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé, Minister of Water Resources and Energy Gaston Eloundou Essomba held a meeting on September 10, 2026, with Egypt’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs Karim Sherif. The sides discussed cooperation in water supply, energy, investment, infrastructure projects and technology transfer, The Rio Times reports.
Energy and water projects
The Egyptian side presented its experience in dam construction, hydropower, solar generation, water desalination and water resources management. The meeting also separately addressed the Kikot hydroelectric power plant: Egyptian companies are among the prequalified participants for this project.
Cameroon identified increasing electricity generation, including through solar energy and the use of natural gas, among its priorities. The country also seeks to connect the power grids of its southern and northern regions and rehabilitate the Lagdo hydroelectric power plant in the north. In the water sector, the authorities plan to develop small hillside dams to improve rural communities’ access to water.

Forum for investors
Representatives of Cameroon and Egypt agreed to strengthen the training of Cameroonian engineers and officials and facilitate technology transfer. By the end of 2026, Egypt plans to hold a Cameroonian-Egyptian business forum, where Yaoundé is expected to present projects ready to attract Egyptian specialists and investment.
The cooperation continues contacts that took place between the countries earlier. In March 2025 in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told Cameroonian Foreign Minister Lejeune Mbella Mbella that Egypt was ready to share its experience in dam construction, electricity generation and supply. In February 2026, Cameroon completed the purchase of a 51% stake in electricity distributor ENEO from Actis for 78 billion CFA francs, or about $138 million. In May, the company was renamed Société Camerounaise d’Electricité — Socadel.
