Canada is investing $150 million in the construction of a spaceport

The Canadian government is investing 200 million Canadian dollars (about $150 million) in the construction of a spaceport within the country.

This was announced by Canadian Defense Minister David McHinty.

According to him, the Department of National Defence has signed a 10-year agreement with MLS, which provides for the creation of a launch site as part of the Sovereign Space Launch Program.

The new spaceport is being built in the province of Nova Scotia on the Atlantic coast.

“This is an ideal location for safe and efficient operations, given its geography and proximity to the open ocean,” McHinty noted.

He emphasized that the project is intended to strengthen the country’s technological and security sovereignty.

According to him, about 20% of Canada’s economy depends on satellite technologies, including the banking system, communications, and logistics.

The first launches from the new spaceport are expected to take place in 2028.

As a reminder, the American company SpaceX recently successfully launched the upgraded GPS III-SV09 navigation satellite on behalf of the U.S. Space Force.
