Carney criticizes Trump administration over posts about Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the administration of US President Donald Trump amid a trade confrontation between the countries. As CNBC Top News reports, he responded to a journalist’s question about social media posts by US officials that mocked Canadian military personnel.

Call for serious negotiations

Carney said that the United States and Canada have an opportunity to conclude a mutually beneficial trade agreement. According to him, such an arrangement must respect Canada’s sovereignty, as well as its right to protect and support Quebec culture and the French language.

The Canadian prime minister called on the US side to stop posting memes, mocking Canada and trying to project toughness, and instead discuss trade issues seriously. He added that such behavior is not constructive, while noting that it is a matter for American democracy.

Mention of Lake Ontario

Carney’s comment also concerned President Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” CNBC notes that Carney had previously suspended trade negotiations with the United States.
