China has committed to purchasing more than $17 billion worth of U.S. goods

China has committed to purchasing more than $17 billion worth of U.S. goods

China has agreed to increase its annual purchases of U.S. agricultural products by at least $17 billion beyond existing agreements through 2028, particularly regarding soybean imports. The White House announced this on May 18.

The new commitments are seen as an expansion of trade agreements between the countries in the agricultural sector and could impact global food markets.

Beijing, China, has reinstated the registration of over 400 U.S. beef processing facilities and added new facilities to the registry. In addition, Beijing is working with U.S. regulators to lift bans on the remaining plants. Furthermore, China has resumed imports of poultry meat from states that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated as free of avian influenza.

The new agricultural purchases will supplement the commitments made following the trade truce between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in October 2025. Under that agreement, China has already committed to purchasing 25 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans annually through 2028.

China also agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft. This batch of aircraft—China’s first deal since 2017 to purchase U.S.-made Boeing aircraft—will help create “high-paying jobs for highly skilled professionals in the U.S. manufacturing sector and allow the Chinese to fly on U.S.-made aircraft for decades to come.”

Washington and Beijing have agreed to establish a trade council to regulate activities in non-sensitive sectors of the economy. An investment council will also be created to serve as an “intergovernmental forum” for discussing relevant issues.

Under the agreements, China will also address restrictions on the sale of equipment and technologies for the extraction and processing of rare earth metals.
