KKL-JNF releases archival photos of Sukkot celebrations in Israel — Jerusalem Post
The KKL-JNF Jewish National Fund photo archive has released a series of four previously unpublished photographs showing Sukkot celebrations in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s. The images depict religious rituals, a mass celebration, a children’s procession and the traditional Jerusalem market for the four species, the Jerusalem Post reports.
Celebrations in Jerusalem and Horshat Tal
A 1959 photograph shows a Hasid in a sukkah in Jerusalem performing the mitzvah of the lulav while holding the four species. According to KKL-JNF, the walls of the sukkah are decorated with handmade paper garlands and ornaments.
Another photograph, dated 1963, shows a large celebration in Horshat Tal in northern Israel. Families and children watch a dance performance dedicated to the harvest festival.

Children’s procession and the market of the four species
A 1964 photograph captured children taking part in the Jerusalem “Flag of Jerusalem” ceremony during Chol HaMoed, the intermediate days of Sukkot. Participants dressed in white walk through a park with the four species, flowers, flags and religious attributes.
The final photograph was taken in 1967 at Jerusalem’s market of the four species, which is held in the city every year. It shows a boy examining an etrog near tables covered with lulavs, myrtle branches and etrogs. KKL-JNF Archives Director Efrat Sinai noted that these images demonstrate the combination of tradition, Zionist education, agriculture and community in the celebration of Sukkot.
