Madlanga Commission in South Africa refers 17 people for investigation
In South Africa, the commission chaired by Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga referred 17 different people for investigation in two interim reports. As Daily Maverick reports, the first report concerned 14 people. The second report added the names of suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, Witness G and Brown Mogotsi, and also again referred organized crime unit sergeant Fannie Nkosi for investigation.
Suspensions and arrests
According to the publication’s calculations, among people who appeared in the commission’s testimony or were connected to its work, there were at least eight suspensions and at least 11 arrests. The commission also filed a criminal complaint against Suliman Karrim over his repeated failure to appear at hearings.
Major General Richard Shibiri and Brigadier Rachel Matjeng were dismissed. Former head of the Hawks unit in KwaZulu-Natal province Lesetja Senona resigned after being suspended. Major General Feroz Khan was dismissed after failing to appear in disciplinary proceedings; his testimony before the commission is scheduled for September 28. Before that, the commission requires an independent medical assessment.

People mentioned in testimony
The commission released a photograph of five men who were named in testimony as the alleged Big Five group: Katisho “KT” Molefe, Steve Motsumi, Ignatius Mothakathi, “King Nyambose” Mthethwa and the late Jothan “Mswazi” Msibi. The publication also mentions Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala: his ties to senior police officials and other alleged members of criminal groups were the subject of the commission’s hearings.
According to the column, suspended Ekurhuleni metro police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi was served with a fifth arrest warrant within several weeks while he was already seeking bail in court. The commission announced a recess until September 15.
