President Jeri deploys soldiers as violence grips the Peruvian capital
Peru’s new president José Jeri declared a 30-day state of emergency in Lima amid an alarming rise in violent crime, including killings, extortion, and attacks in public spaces. Between January and September, police reported 1,690 homicides, up from 1,502 the previous year.

The government’s emergency plan allows for military deployment to assist police and potential temporary suspension of civil rights such as freedom of assembly and movement. The move follows the ousting of former President Dina Boluarte, who was removed earlier this month after failing to contain the crime wave.
In a national address, Jeri vowed decisive action, saying, “Wars are won with actions, not words.” He promised a new, tougher approach to criminal networks, calling the emergency a necessary step to restore order and protect citizens amid Peru’s deepening security crisis.
