Latvia is considering participating in efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Latvia is exploring the possibility of joining international efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

This was stated by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa on social media platform X.

According to her, Riga supports international initiatives aimed at ensuring safe maritime transit in one of the world’s key strategic regions.

“To achieve this goal, we need to cooperate with the U.S. We are considering ways our country can contribute,” Silina wrote.

The issue of security in the Strait of Hormuz remains relevant amid statements by international actors regarding the terms of a ceasefire in the region and access for merchant ships to this route.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that, in accordance with the ceasefire agreements, the passage of merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz allegedly remains open.

At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that restrictive measures against Iranian ports will remain in effect until the agreements between the U.S. and Iran are fully implemented.

As a reminder, Iran announced new rules for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the world’s key oil supply routes. Commercial vessels will now be able to transit only with permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.

Iran announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping for the duration of the ceasefire in Lebanon.
