Latvia has banned the import of books from Russia and Belarus
On September 1, a ban on the import of industrial goods from Russia and Belarus took effect in Latvia, including printed materials, books, newspapers, clothing, shoes, toys, and sports equipment.
The restrictions also apply to goods manufactured in Russia and Belarus that are imported via third countries. In addition, “Latvian Post” has stopped processing international EMS express shipments from Russia.
The ban does not apply to goods arriving from other European Union countries, nor does it apply to transit through Latvian territory to other EU member states. The European Commission supported the Latvian government’s initiative on security grounds, and the country’s parliament adopted the relevant legislative amendments in late July.
The main objectives of the restrictions are to protect the country’s national security, reduce export revenues from Russia and Belarus, and counter the spread of Russian propaganda materials.
