In Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid said that citizens should not panic after a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Before the meeting, Netanyahu warned of the possibility of an attack by Israel’s enemies ahead of the upcoming elections, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Call for a responsible approach

Lapid stressed that security threats should be handled professionally and responsibly. According to him, Israel’s security and Israel Defense Forces bases should not serve as a backdrop for election campaign videos.

The opposition politician also said that elections must take place at the proper time. In his view, there are no grounds to postpone or reschedule the vote.

Meeting ahead of elections

Lapid said that if Netanyahu were genuinely concerned about national security, he would enlist 15,000 ultra-Orthodox men, whom the opposition leader described as evading service. According to Lapid, the Chief of the General Staff pointed to ten problems related to a shortage of combat soldiers and weakening Israel Defense Forces readiness.

In addition, Lapid said that he had demanded a four-way meeting involving Netanyahu, the head of Israel’s Shin Bet security service, and the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Justice Noam Sohlberg. According to him, the meeting is needed to coordinate actions ahead of the elections.
