Chardoney Glacier in Italy may disappear by 2040 — ANSA English

The Chardoney Glacier in Gran Paradiso National Park in northern Italy may not survive until 2040 if the current rate of glacial mass loss continues. This conclusion was reached by the Italian Meteorological Society after measurements taken on September 21 at the end of summer.

Measurements in the Soana Valley

The study was conducted on the Chardoney Glacier in the Soana Valley, on the Piedmont side of Gran Paradiso National Park. As ANSA English reports, the data were collected in cooperation with Iren Energia, Gran Paradiso National Park, the University of Turin, Sapienza University of Rome, Arpa Piemonte and the Altra Quota association.

Observations were carried out as part of campaigns led by the Italian Glaciological Committee Foundation. The findings of the Italian Meteorological Society's report were published on social media.

Ice losses over three years

The report stated that the glacier's significant mass loss was caused by a lack of spring snow and, above all, extreme and prolonged summer heat. Over three years, the glacier lost 2.2 million cubic meters of ice. This is equivalent to the volume of water runoff that could, on average, fill about 250 Olympic swimming pools annually.
