Lukashenko stated that the CSTO needs to handle its relations with Armenia more carefully

Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, has called on the Collective Security Treaty Organization to be more diplomatic in its relations with Yerevan. 

This was reported by European Truth, citing a statement made by the politician during a meeting with the CSTO Secretary General on April 6, 2026. According to him, the issue of cooperation with a country that does not actually participate in the work of the alliance under the auspices of the Russian Federation but remains a member requires special attention.

The Belarusian leader noted that Armenia is facing a difficult domestic situation ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for the summer. He emphasized the importance of the organization taking cautious steps during this electoral period to account for the complex political circumstances in the country. Armenia has previously criticized the CSTO on multiple occasions for inaction during border conflicts and has suspended its participation in the organization’s activities.

Yerevan stated that it may resort to tough measures if the price of Russian gas rises. Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan noted that the country would consider withdrawing from the CSTO and the EAEU if Russia takes such a step.

Armenia appealed to the EU to send a rapid response team to counter Russian influence.
